Survival or Happiness?

An Inspirational Impulse from Our Clinical Director, Hajo Müller

If you’re reading this, I congratulate you—you are alive!

And that is by no means a given. Throughout millions of years of biological evolution on our planet, the top priority has always been survival. Those who adopted a too-relaxed attitude toward the dangers of existence significantly reduced their chances of staying alive.

We are designed to survive—not to be happy.

With the development of consciousness, the ability to plan and self-reflection, there has been an in increase in importance in the hierarchy of needs including general well-being, satisfaction and happiness. But how much should happiness be valued as a life goal? Is it an artificial luxury product? And is this perhaps why so many people struggle to feel truly happy?

We are not powerless against our genetic programming. The way we think and act each day makes a difference and has a long-term impact on our brain’s structure. This is what psychologist Rick Hanson calls "self-directed neuroplasticity"—by directing our attention, building positive routines and habits, and cultivating an attitude of appreciation toward ourselves and the world around us, we can shape our emotions and experiences in a positive way.

Congratulations—you are alive!

By lingering just a few extra seconds with a positive experience—even in a single calming breath—you help transform a fleeting mental state into a lasting neural structure.”

Dr. Rick Hanson · author of "Buddha’s Brain"
