MIND Newsletter 20 May | Psychedelic Group Therapy? | Michael Utsch @ INSIGHT | Next Beyond Experience (DE) 5-8 June

Dear Reader,

For the third year in a row, Prof. Dr. med. Gerhard Gründer and Dr. sc. hum. Henrik Jungaberle visited the Usona team in Madison, Wisconsin, to discuss developments in the field of psilocybin, data from the German EPIsoDE study, and collaboration – both used the opportunity to participate at Usona’s very inspiring International Forum on Consciousness. The conference brought insights from neuroscience (Gül Dölen), clinical research (Charles Raison) and anthropology (Manvir Singh) together with philsophy, spirituality and emotionally moving life stories – like the one of rock star Melissa Etheridge talked about the biographical meaning of psychedelics and how they helped her to overcome the death of a loved one.

Thank you to the Usona team for being exceptional hosts!

In Berlin, a full house at the INSIGHT Forum followed Prof. Dr. med. Franz Vollenweider discussing how mindfulness and the psychedelic experience go together and may benefit each other.

Franz is an important member of MIND’s Scientific Adivsory Board and a leader in the field of psychedelic research since the 1990ties.

Mental Health: Power, Privilege & Controlling the Narrative: Vested Interest in ‘Mental Health’ [Mad in America]
Is therapy political? David Hansen, a therapist, believes so. Hansen argues therapy is inherently political, influenced by systemic forces that often marginalize human experiences. The author encourages us to think about who has the power to shape the narrative around ‘mental health’ and who may have a vested interest to do so in a particular way. He prompts readers to question the influence of pharmaceutical companies and psychiatric diagnoses. What do they stand to gain?

Psychedelics: Can Psychedelics Help Heal our Relationship with The Natural World? [Atmos]
The Asháninka, an indigenous group of Brazil, have for centuries used plant medicines to guide environmental stewardship, viewing them as a way to communicate with the Earth. Some recent psychedelic studies have indicated psychedelic experiences can foster empathy toward plants. While taking psychedelics as a singular experience or in an artificial setting may not lead to a more connected relationship with the natural world, the Ashaninka offer a different model of environmentalism.

Society: AI Can Spontaneously Develop Human-like Communication, Study Finds [the Guardian]
Can AI models adopt social norms? A new study has shown that when AI agents, like ChatGPT, communicate in groups without external involvement they can begin to adopt linguistic forms and social norms, mirroring human social behavior. These findings suggest that AI can’t be reduced to a processing language, it might be learning to negotiate, coordinate, agree and disagree, much like us. Or is it programed to just be a people pleaser?

Born on this day 199 years ago, the champion of empiricism reminds us why diversity of thought is a prerequisite for real understanding.

"The only way in which a human being can make some approach to knowing the whole of a subject, is by hearing what can be said about it by persons of every variety of opinion, and studying all modes in which it can be looked at by every character of mind. No wise man ever acquired his wisdom in any mode but this; nor is it in the nature of human intellect to become wise in any other manner."

- John Stuart Mill (May 20th, 1806 – May 8, 1873)
